Amigos

Did you know that in Durham you could meet people from over one hundred countries around the world? There are about 1500 international students at Durham University and New College. Some come with their families others come alone. If you are an international student or a visitor from overseas we are especially pleased to welcome you. Do let us know how we can contact you while you are in Durham. Why not drop into Amigos, the coffee bar for International Students. Amigos meets every Wednesday evening from 8.00pm in St. Nicholas Church Upper Hall.

Football@4

On most Saturdays at 4pm, two groups from St. Nic’s (a men's team and a women's team!) meet for an hour to play 5-a-side football. Anyone interested in joining us for a game should contact the church office for more information.

Friends@Nics

It can be a bit daunting joining a new church. As you look around, all the faces are strange, and everyone seems to know each other already. You may be asking “How do I start making friends? Will I ever feel that this is my Christian family?”

The best way of getting to know other people is to spend time with them – time doing (dare I say it) non-church things. This is why we’ve started Friends@Nics to organise some opportunities for people to get together socially. Everyone is different, so we try to arrange a range of events to suit as many tastes as possible.

So far we’ve arranged ...

  • Walks
  • Carol singing
  • Meals out
  • Theatre visits
  • A quiz
  • An International lunch

Everyone is welcome to any Friends@Nics event. Look out for details of events on our 'news and events' page!

Small Groups

Small groups have a vital and essential role in the life of St. Nic’s. It is our intention that the purposes of the church, fellowship, worship, outreach, discipleship and service are reflected in the life of our small groups. Also, our groups are aiming for growth, both spiritually and numerically, a concept central to our vision for the church as a whole. (See A Church Fit For The Future, our vision document)

How then do these values affect the life of our small groups?...

Groups meet weekly or fortnightly and provide an opportunity for getting to know a small number of people well, which is important in a large church. Much of the pastoral care of the church takes place in and through the groups as members support and pray for one another.

Prayer will be an important part of most group meetings, for one another but also with a strong outward focus. We are encouraged to pray for families, friends and colleagues, the life and ministry of St. Nic’s and where possible a shared mission interest.

Some form of Bible study will also frequently be included and this will often be linked to the current sermon series, with an emphasis on application. We will work out together how what we hear on Sundays makes a difference to our lives during the week.

As we get to know one another in small groups, we can encourage and support one another in ministry and service. Groups may like to be involved in some kind of practical activity…e.g. helping with an Alpha course, involvement in the local community or organising an event to which friends can be invited.

Groups work best with about 8-12 members, so as they grow they will be encouraged to multiply! This will involve groups growing new leaders, one way in which we can identify and encourage one another’s gifts.

There are currently about 12 evening groups that meet at different locations throughout the city on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings. There is a Parent and Toddler group that meets on a Monday morning in St. Nic’s during school terms and 5 women’s groups that meet on Thursday mornings, also in school terms.

For more information about small groups in St. Nic’s please contact the Church Office.

There are also some groups where the emphasis is more on using skills and doing things together. The music group plays at our services each Sunday and rehearses on Friday evenings

Our flower arrangers also enhance our worship with their gifts and work closely as a team, especially at Christmas and Easter.
