At St. Nic’s we regard ourselves as part of the wider church both in this country and abroad. For many years St. Nic’s has had links with churches overseas through our support for mission societies. We support these societies through prayer and financially. Each week one of the societies features on the prayer page of the notices and we hold a prayer meeting between the evening services on the third Sunday of every month. Financially about 10% of the church budget is given to the societies we support.

Here is an outline of St Nic’s support for the church worldwide:

SAMS - South American Mission Society

SAMS - South American Mission SocietyWe support a long term project translating the Bible into tribal languages of the native population of South America. These are amongst the poorest communities in South America and often live in the most inhospitable parts of the continent. Many people are illiterate and SAMS is involved in developing literacy classes so that people can read the Bible. Bringing the Bible to oppressed communities can bring them to Christ.

The Bible Society

The Bible SocietyThe Bible Society is much more than a printer of Bibles. They also produce comic strips, films, videos, discussion materials, tapes and scripture portions. The Bible Society’s materials are not just for mainstream churches, they also reach out to minority groups such as prisoners and minority language groups. The Bible Society works in partnership with churches and mission organisations across the world.

Spanish Outreach Ministries - Salou

Spanish Outreach Ministries - SalouOver twenty years ago two members of St Nic’s, David and Phyllis White retired to Spain. Here they joined a small church which met in a garage. The Pastor was an Englishman, Edward Bracier who knew the Lord was leading him to Spain and the Spanish people.

Many Spanish people have a mistrust of churches. This is in part a consequence of the Franco era when the Catholic Church was very close to Government. Preaching the Gospel and winning people for the Lord was never going to be easy. However with the financial and prayer support of St. Nic’s and a few other churches the congregation has grown to over 200.

Church Mission Society

Church Mission SocietyFor many years St Nic’s supported Mid Africa Ministries and in particular projects in Uganda. Today we are linked with Bungokho Rural Development Centre, a community development project providing training in agricultural and building skills appropriate to the local people along with spreading the Gospel.

Lesotho

LesothoDurham Diocese has a link with the Diocese of Lesotho and along with other churches in the Diocese St. Nic’s makes a financial contribution to this work. The link includes education, agricultural projects and skills training in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Why not join us in praying for these mission links on the third Sunday of each month between 7.00 and 8.00pm in the Upper Hall. We also pray for those members of St. Nic’s who are involved in short term service with mission organisations.

If you are interested in short term service the church office has a directory of organisations providing opportunities.

If you would like to know more about St Nics’ links with the worldwide church please speak to any member of the International Mission committee: Marc Ghosh, Helen Lewis, Tom Gregory-Smith, Claire Clark, Richard Baker and Andrew Stribblehill.
